Give Us This Day Our Daily (Soft) Bread

Whenever the Wife goes into one of her occasional HK-is-a-nicer-place-to-live-in-than-Singapore spiels, I remind her of the shelf after shelf of different brands of bread available at the NTUC Fairprice and Cold Storage supermarkets back home.

They might not be the best bread in the world, but they are soft and good enough to eat on their own.
And they are widely available to the masses.  Even the proletariat can afford that bread.

Not so in HK.  Walk into any Wellcome or Park N Shop supermarket and you see the bread shelves dominated by this local brand, Garden.

This stuff cannot possibly be more different from Singapore's Gardenia.  The loaves seem to go dry and hard the moment they leave the factory. Put some jam or butter on it, and you can actually see the spread repel in disgust and consolidate into clumps.

I buy Garden only when we've run out of the softer (but more expensive) bread from CitySuper, the high-end supermarket with four stores on HK Island and Kowloon.

Isn't this supposed to be Asia's World City ?  Why is soft, decent bread considered a luxury item ?

Airport Auntie !!!

Place : Hong Kong International Airport

Woman, husband and other male companion (son ?) arrive at their boarding gate at the departure time of their flight to San Francisco.

Problem : Gates close 20 mins before departure.

They were put on a flight to Los Angeles a few hours later.

Auntie, you damn solid, ah !!!

Big Play

I've been seeing many such ads in MRT stations recently, for some Priceline/Airport Express Taiwan travel promotion.

The pronunciation of "Taiwan" in the Minan dialect sounds like 大玩 in Cantonese, which means having a lot of fun and literally translates into "big play".

Don't really understand the 6th tone for the 大 though.

Unpublishable TripAdvisor Forum Response #003

Oh, sillypie !

Hi,arriving at Hong Kong on this Sun(16/11) late afternoon for a 4 days holidays and wonder how the weather right now... did a check on some of the weather websites and they seem to have variations....

so can anybody provide a real time update on the weather right now.. so that I know what to pack... hoping for a cool weather..

It's a cool 20 degrees right now ... ... wait, a bus just went past - it's warm and there's a slight breeze ... wait, the clouds have just parted - it's sunny and 24 degrees ... wait, I just walked past a G2000 - it's 18 degrees and chilly ... ...

Perhaps regular "HK71" said it best in a very civilised manner (you can almost imagine him doing a facepalm):
The weather now has no impact on the weather next week - I can tell you that the weather today is very different to a week ago. You need to look at the weather forecasts. Google "weather forecast hong kong".

Unpublishable TripAdvisor Forum Response #002

I had scoured the TripAdvisor.com forums extensively last year when I was doing research for my trip to Spain, and out of gratitude for the advice and recommendations that other forum participants had shared, I had decided to "give back to the community" by hanging around the Hong Kong forum and helping travelers plan their holidays in this great city.

The forum is moderated, so rude and offensive posts are deleted by administrators.  However, once in while, I come across posts or participants that are so stupid or ignorant, I just felt like verbally abusing them or smacking them at the back of their heads.

But I couldn't.  Hence this series for me to vent.  (Still, to the credit of the other forum participants, particularly those that had been conferred the "Destination Expert" title, every question does get answered eventually)

And today's selected post is by sillypie from Singapore !

Hi hi, can anyone advise on the room amenities and services? Already has some ideas from reading the hotel reviews and forum (great info and tips!) but just like to confirm, here goes...

1) wat are the toiletries provided?

Think Shampoo, hair conditioners, body wash, toothbrushes(quantity?) are provided. How about toothpaste ? and any others?  planning not to bring any common toiletries from home.

2) is housekeeping service conducted on daily basis unless we put the 'do not disturb' sign'

3) tipping the staff allowed ?

4) No room service like ordering of food?

5) A kettle for boiling water ?would be good for making milk

6) Fridge? to store our own food stuff and drink.

Any more info/input would be much, much appreciated.. looking forward to your reply.. cheers !!

Hey, suaku !  Go e-mail the hotel !!!  You're making a trip to Hong Kong Disneyland, not planning the fucking invasion of Normandy ...
